It’s fair to say I feel a little aggrieved by this scoreline. Yes, we were outplayed by a Benfica side with too much invention and control for our, often flat-footed, team but the real difference between the teams here was the Portuguese team’s clinical finishing. Granted, neither team was hitting the target with any great frequency but their strikers always looked the favourites against an aging defence. In hindsight, playing an overly aggressive midfield (Snodgrass, Howson, Merino, Robinson) and chasing the game from the 2nd minute gave our back line very little support but it did mean we carved out our own fair share of chances. Becchio was our star man for the evening but with Howson, Snodgrass and Beckford stifled, he received very little support.

Thankfully, it being pre-season, and not having to face teams of quite the 31 times Liga Sagres champions each week, there are valuable lessons we can learn from this without having to panic quite yet!
