League Cup First Round
12th August 2009

A game we were expected to win comfortably against League 2 Bury and an opportunity to settle some nerves, both players’ and fans’ alike. We were given a great start on 10 minutes when Mettomo was shown a straight red for a cynical two-footed foul on Beckford and Bury were never in it from that point forward.

Some awful play from Beckford on 15 minutes looked to be setting the tone for another underachieving match. Put clean through on the keeper, he took 3 or four touches too many before turning his back on goal and hitting a horrible pass 5 yards behind Snodgrass on the wing. Thankfully, 2 minutes later he redeemed himself holding the ball up on the edge of the area before laying back for Merino to hit a blinding 30 yarder into the top corner and again on 36″ where, put through one on one with the keeper only to be denied by the post.

Merino doubled the advantage with another 25 yeard screamer that the keeper could only parry into the net on 40 minutes, with Beckford being denied by the post, again, 2 minutes later from the same place on the pitch.

Coming straight out after the break, it was those two linking up again with Merino jinking past two before playing a perfect through ball to Beckford to beat the keeper from 6 yards.

Snodgrass was taken injured on 57 following a clash with Dawson and underlined his importance by his absence, with the team lacking a cutting edge following his departure. We had plenty of chances but the team didn’t gel in the same way and things were compounded when Doyle was the second player to see red 3 minutes from the end for a needless two-footed challenge on Dawson.

In the end, a comfortable 3 goal win with encouraging performances from Merino and Beckford, but the loss of Doyle and Snodgrass took the sheen off the results somewhat.
