[L1] Leeds 1-0 Exeter (8-8-2009)

Leeds 1 – 0

League 1
8th August 2009

A nervous start to the campaign but a win and a clean sheet is nothing to complain about. There were moments when the team performed fluidly but all too often passes went astray, we lacked any bite in front of goal and we were pulled out of position when out of possession, conceding far too many fouls in the process.

Prior to the deciding goal in the 24th, we’d had the upper hand but Beckford and Doyle both squandered good opportunities before Beckford bumbled in Golbourne’s weak clearance from a Merino corner.

From half an hour in, however, Exeter started pushing back, forcing errors and making us look rusty. We were lucky on two or three occasions that we weren’t facing more proficient finishers. Taylor, Nardiello and Stewart should all have stretched Walker more than they did before we settled again towards the end of the second half.

With 15 minutes remaining, we managed to find our stride again, with Merino skimming the bar twice and Howson forcing a save from Jones. By now, we’d brought Becchio, who was never in the game, off for Showunmi who showed a couple of times why he shouldn’t be given the ball at his feet. Despite the language barrier, Leandro also got his home debut from the bench on 78 minutes, looking incredibly lively and getting involved in some nice flowing moves.

Overall, a shaky performance but 3 points and a clean sheet and I’ll take that every time.
